Connecting your family account

From your My Children page, there are two ways to add a child to your family: create a brand-new login for them, or link an account they already have.

Adding a child

Add a child creates a login you control right away — fill in their first and last name, date of birth, grade level, and a username and password for them to sign in with. As soon as you submit it, they can sign in and start learning.

Link an existing child is for a child who already has their own login. Select "Already has their own login? Link an existing child" and enter the code they send you. To get that code, they open their own Family page and select Create a code — it's valid for about 72 hours, and they can copy or share it, or cancel it and make a new one. Once you enter a valid code, that child is linked to your family.

Removing a connection

The two paths above are undone differently, on purpose:

  • A child you created can only be removed — this permanently deletes their login, progress, and work.
  • A child you linked can only be unlinked — this ends your family's access, but their own account, school, and history are completely untouched.

A linked child can also remove a guardian themselves at any time from their own Family page — they're never locked into a connection someone else made.

You can have more than one child, and a child can have more than one linked guardian.

If you can't add or link a child

Adding or linking a child needs room on your plan — if you've used up what your plan includes, you'll see a message pointing you to Billing to see your options. Creating a brand-new child login specifically also needs a parent plan; linking by code still works even when creating a new login doesn't.

The child's own plan matters too: if their plan doesn't allow adding a parent, their Family page will say so instead of showing their code, with a link to see plans. This is checked again when you enter their code, so a code that worked when it was made can still be refused if their plan changed in the meantime.

See Managing your subscription for how plans and billing periods work.
